About the word hypnosis
The word itself was coined by the Scottish doctor Dr. James Braid, in the nineteenth century. Prior to this, the "process" was known as animal magnetism or mesmerism. During my research, I found that people get scared when they hear the word hypnosis, most associate the term with stage hypnosis, which is more of a show than hypnosis and is generally responsible for many myths that are prescribed to hypnosis.
I assume that this is also why there are more and more techniques that are undoubtedly part of hypnosis, but experts and authors give them different names:
Autogenic training, creative visualization, healing power of imagination, progressive relaxation, hypnoanalysis, autosuggestion, power of imagination, guided meditation are the most common names for techniques that have all the characteristics of trance.
I don't mind the fact that they use another word, not least the word hypnosis is not the most appropriate as it comes from the word hypnos, which was the Greek god of sleep, and hypnosis is not sleep. However, I think that all of this causes people confusion and at the same time does injustice to hypnosis, perpetuates taboos and fear of what is probably the oldest psychotherapeutic activity.
